  • The Area
The Château de Montfort and its hamlet are at the heart of the Dordogne Valley, within easy reach of many places of interest-too many to mention fully. Three of the "Plus Beaux Villages de France" are within 10 minutes drive of La Barde; the bastide village of Domme and the riverside villages of Beynac and La Roque Gageac. The châteaux of Beynac, Castelnaud, Milandes, Fenelon and Puymartin can all be visited with ease, as can the formal gardens at Eyrignac and Marqueyssac.

This part of the Dordogne Valley is well known as the "Pays de l'homme", with Les Eyzies being the "Capital of Prehistory". In and around Les Eyzies are many places to visit and marvel at our ancestors way of life including Font de Gaume and the Museum of Prehistory at Les Eyzies, Roque St Cristophe and Lasqaux nearby.

The beautiful town of Sarlat with its narrow medieval streets, and well preserved buildings is full of interestng shops and many restaurants. Twice weekly markets are a must for the visitor to the region, as all of the gastronomic specialities of the Périgord can be bought there. Summer evenings in Sarlat are atmospheric. Sit outside and enjoy street musicians and entertainers, especially during the music and drama festivals.

Rocamadour, the famous pilgrimmage site is only a short drive away and well worth visiting, even just to marvel at the village clinging to the cliffs.
